How to Obtain an Instrument Rating

Earning an Instrument rating involves focused training and practice to master advanced skills:

Prerequisites
1. Hold at least a Private Pilot License.
2. Be proficient in reading, writing, and understanding English.
3. Hold a current FAA Medical Certificate.
Ground School Training
1. Gain in-depth knowledge of IFR navigation, meteorology, air traffic control procedures, and aviation regulations.
Flight Training
1. Log a minimum of 40 hours under instrument conditions, including:
1. 1. 15 hour with an FAA-certified flight instructor.
  2. Cross country flight training using IFR navigation.
  3. Instrument approaches, holding patterns, and emergency procedures.
FAA Written Exam
1. Pass the FAA instrument knowledge test, covering navigation, weather interpretation, and flight regulations.
Practical Test (Checkride)
1. Complete an oral exam and flight test with an FAA-designated examiner to demonstrate your IFR knowledge and flying proficiency.
