How to Obtain Your Private Pilot Certificate

Earning a Private Pilot Certificate involves several steps, all of which are designed to ensure you’re prepared to fly safely and confidently.

Meet the eligibility requirements
1. Be at least 17 years of age (16 to fly solo).
2. Be able to read, write, and speak, and understand English.
3. Obtain a third-class medical from an FAA-authorized medical examiner.
Ground School Training
1. Learn the principles of flight, navigation, meteorology, aircraft systems, and FAA regulations through structured classroom or online instruction.
Flight Training
1. Log a minimum of 40 hours, including at least:
  1. 20 hours with an instructor.
  2. 10 hours solo time.
  3. Practice cross country navigation, takeoffs, landings, and emergency procedures.
Pass the FAA Written Exam
1. Test your knowledge on the material covered in ground school with a 60-question multiple-choice exam.
Complete a Practical Test
1. Demonstrate your knowledge and flying skills during a checkride with an FAA-designated examiner.
